Dear Colleagues,
This
is a reminder that the
final submission date for abstracts for
this years Seminar for Arabian Studies Conference is the
15th of February 2010.
If you wish to offer
a paper for consideration by the Steering Committee, please send a 200-word
abstract to arrive either before or on the 15th of February 2010 to seminar.arab@durham.ac.uk
or write to
the Seminar for Arabian Studies, c/o The British Museum, Middle East Department,
Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3DG, England. Abstracts submitted after
the deadline may be accepted, rejected or suggested as a poster contribution
at the discretion of the organizers. The abstract must include:
1) the name(s) and
full contact details (affiliation(s)) of the contributor(s)
2) the title of the
proposed paper
3) set out what the
paper intends to cover
4) the approach it
will take
5) indicate the significance
of the topic
Presentations are
20 minutes in length followed by 5 minutes of questions
Due to the limited
time available for the programme, and the increasing number of abstracts
we receive there is no guarantee that all papers will be accepted. As
in previous years we can normally only accept one paper from any given
project.
All abstracts received
by the February deadline will be considered by the Steering Committee
and will be selected on the basis of quality, originality, and importance
of the topic.
Details of the Seminar
will be posted on our website soon (www.arabianseminar.org.uk) and further
information will be sent out in April, once the provisional programme
has been organized.

of the Seminar for Arabian Studies. This now covers all volumes 1-39
(1971-2009). Special thanks go to Dr David Milson at Archaeopress for
his assistance. The index is available online in html format, or can be

Seminar has available a very limited number of rooms in Ramsay Hall, Student
Accommodation. Please do not delay in making your booking as early as
possible as rooms are only available on a first come first served basis.
Our allocation of accommodation at Ramsay Hall student accommodation is
nearly filled. We are currently investigating the possibility of the availability
of further rooms. As such, please do not assume that this accommodation
is available when returning your registration form and check before making
any payment. The cost of bed and breakfast is £37.00 per night.

Posted
the final call for papers, along with details of this year's MBI public
lecture, to be held on the evening of the first day of the Seminar, Thursday
23rd July 2009, which will be given by Michael Macdonald (Faculty of Oriental
Studies, University of Oxford) on 'Arabia and the Written Word'. All participants
of the Seminar are welcome to this lecture. This will be
followed the next day by a Parallel Special Sessions at the Seminar on
'The Development of Arabic as a Written Language' and the 'Archaeology
of Qatar'.

announcement that if you wish to offer a paper to the 2009 Seminar for
Arabian Studies (23-25 July 2009)
please send a 200-word abstract before the
16th of February 2009 for consideration.
The abstract must set out what the paper intends to cover, the approach
it will take and indicate the significance of the topic. Due to the limited
time available, and the increasing number of abstracts we receive there
is no guarantee that all papers will be accepted. All abstracts received
by the February deadline will be considered by the Steering Committee
in early March and will be selected on the basis of quality, originality,
and importance of the topic. As in previous years we can normally only
accept one paper from any given project.
The Committee is happy to announce that this year there will be a Special
Session entitled 'The Development of Arabic as a Written Language'.
This session is being arranged by Dr Robert G. Hoyland, Michael C.A. Macdonald
and Dr Venetia Porter.
The Committee also encourages individuals that wish to present posters
at the Seminar. If you are interested in offering a poster at this year's
Seminar please send an abstract, clearly stating
that it is for a poster, before the 30th of June.
If you know of anyone who would like to be added to the Seminar mailing
list please ask them to email seminar.arab@durham.ac.uk
us and we will be happy to oblige.

Due to refurbishment
at Ramsay Hall they have had to close down some extra floors unexpectedly.
As a consequence accommodation is no longer available at Ramsay Hall.
Alternative accommodation
has been arranged at Schafer
House, 168 182 Drummond Street, NW1 3HZ. Tel: 020 7387

per night (bed & breakfast) per person in single bedrooms. Please
note that Schafer House is a student residence, not a hotel, and for those
who prefer to make their own arrangements a list
of hotels can be found on our website, however, the Seminar bears

Schafer House has 364 single rooms arranged in flats of up to 5 rooms
around a kitchen/dining room and a shower room with toilet.
The building is of a higher standard than Ramsay Hall and is fully self-catered.
It is located about a 10 minutes walk away from Ramsay Hall across the

Thursday 27th July 2006 - BP Lecture Theatre, British Museum - 18.30 p.m.
"Corridor
of Commerce: Archaeology and the lives of the peoples of the Gulf over
seven thousand years".
In this illustrated lecture, Dr Derek Kennet, archaeologist and lecturer
at the University of Durham, will explore how the pivotal position of
the Gulf from Antiquity to the 19th century is reflected in the rich archaeological
heritage of this region. Admission £5, Concessions £3, Free
to registered attendees of the Seminar.
The lecture forms part of the British Museum's "Middle
East Now Season".
